Ray Winstone s’est révélé dans des succès critiques comme NIL BY MOUTH de Gary Oldman, pour lequel il remporta British Independent Film Award 1998, THE WAR ZONE de Tim Roth, SEXY BEAST de Jonathan Glazer, LAST ORDERS de Fred Schepisi, avec Michael Caine, et LADYBIRD, LADYBIRD de Ken Loach. Cité récemment à l’Australian Film Institute Award du meilleur acteur pour THE PROPOSITION de John Hillcoat, Ray Winstone a tourné sous la direction d’Anthony Minghella RETOUR À COLD MOUNTAIN, et BREAKING AND ENTERING, avec Jude Law, Juliette Binoche et Vera Farmiga. Il tiendra en 2007 le rôle-titre de BEOWULF de Robert Zemeckis. O n a p u l e v o i r e n o u t r e dans QUADROPHENIA de Franc Roddam, FACE d’Antonia Bird, OUR BOY de David Evans, MARTHA, FRANK, DANIEL ET LAWRENCE de Nich Hamm, FINAL CUT de Dominic Anciano et Ray Burdis, FANNY AND ELVIS de Kay Mellor, AGNES BROWNE d’Anjelica Huston, JIMMY GRIMBLE de John Hay et LE ROI ARTHUR d’Antoine Fuqua. Né à Hackney, dans l’Est de Londres, Ray Winstone fut champion de boxe junior et représenta par deux fois l’Angleterre dans des compétitions internationales. Il suivit les cours de comédie de la Corona School avant d’être choisi par Alan Clarke pour le rôle principal du téléfilm SCUM (interdit d’antenne pour violence excessive) et de sa mémorable version cinéma, tournée deux ans plus tard.
